The British Embassy in Jakarta is part of a world-wide network of 230 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. We are currently looking to recruit an Assistant Political Officer coveringhuman rights and good governance.
Indonesia and the United Kingdom have a strongrelationship and we work closely together to promote economic prosperity, international security, conflict prevention, and educational links and totackle climate change.
In order to strengthen our engagement further theBritish Embassy is seeking to hire someone who is able to handle a broad range of tasks working in the Political team but primarily assisting with humanrights / good governance and legal related affairs. This is an excellent role for someone looking to expand their work experience. Experience of working or studying in a British/ international environment is preferred.
Job duties are likely to include : keeping the Embassy updated (providing short oral and written reports in English- usually maximum 1 page) about human rights and good governance issues in Indonesia particularly concerning the rule of law ; developing and managing a broad range of contactsat working level; working on small-scale UK funded human rights projects (fromproject concept development all the way through to project monitoring andevaluation). The successful applicant will be part of the political team and will work closely with others to provide the Indonesian human rights perspective and where necessary basic Indonesian legal system information on a number of cross-cutting political issues.
This will be an exciting and challenging role in the Embassy, working closely with colleagues in the political, media and communications, defence and commercial teams, as well as the British Council.
Main Duties andResponsibilities:
- Keep the Embassy informed by providing short oral and written reports(usually around 1 page) about human rights and good governance issues inIndonesia- particularly in the areas of rule of law, business and human rightsand land rights.
- Be the point of contact/ reference for information and understandingabout basic information about the Indonesian legal system (criminal, publicadministration etc- not corporate/ commercial) and constitutional matters.
- Understand and report on the Indonesian government and civil society’sapproach to a broad range of human rights issues.
- Develop and maintain an excellent network of contacts throughoutIndonesia; across government, academia, media and civil society.
- Propose innovative opportunities, including through projects, to helpdeliver UK policy priorities and offer advice on handling any associated risks.
- Update on regional and global influences in the implementation andobservance of human rights in Indonesia- particularly the UN InternationalHuman Rights frameworks and ASEAN.
- Facilitate and participate in meetings, visits and events.
- Qualificationsand experience:
- A degree majoring in a subjectsuch as Law, International Relations,Politics or a similar subject is essential; a postgraduate degree is desirable
- Excellent understanding of boththe International Human Rights framework, including UN InternationalConventions and the Indonesian Human Rights scene
- An understanding ofinternational relations and familiarity with the UK either through work orstudy is preferred
- Fluent communication andnetworking skills in English (both oral and written, IELTS 6.5 or higher)
- Good spoken Indonesian
- Formal legal experience notrequired but some basic knowledge of Indonesian law and contacts within thelegal system would be highly desirable
- Self-motivation and the abilityto work under light supervision
- Strong interpersonal andteam-working skills
- Good IT skills and experience,including MS Office
Salary:
The British Embassy is an equal opportunities employer. We will offer a generouspackage of salary starting at IDR 9,500,000 per month and benefits, including annual leave and medical cover, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Evidence of previous salary awards should be provided along with the application. Training opportunities in Jakarta and our regional trainingcentre in Singapore are also available.
